Default Hat Disaster.

While looking through my closet I discovered that my Razzle-Dazzle Top Hat had been squished...

It isn't destroyed... but its not as perfect as I'd like it to be.

I have been toying around with the ideas of what Hat I'd buy if I were to go with a new hat... I already know I eventually want to purchase a derby but I want to make that purchase from a Special Hat Shop I like to visit in Gatlinburg, TN. However since I don't know when I m next Gatlinburg Visit will be I've been looking at other options for hats...

Due to this recent disaster I've done some searching online for other hats

The Top hat that currently have is a felt board like hat... I'm not quite sure how to describe what it is made out of. I added the Purple daisy and orange band for a splash of color. I already owned the Hat prior to Clowning and it seemed like a nice addition to the current look I was building.

I have been looking at a couple of styles on Miss Pricilla Mooseburgers website. However seeing a 40 dollar price tag on a hat makes me clench my wallet a little tighter.

While I like the look of small tophats I just don't think that they are the Style I would want for Razzle-Dazzle... I think it would look too small for my character since the rest of my clothes do fit properly.

Another Problem I've been having with my tophat is keeping it on ... Fitz mentioned several ways of affixing the hat to my wig but that was prior to the incident.

Another option I was looking at was the "Bowery Boy" style of hat.

I think it would fit better over my poofy yellow "Silly Boy" wig... and I really like the look. However I don't like the cost as much. I was curious... Does anyone happen to have or know of where I could get a pattern for this type of hat or something similar? I do have a very understanding, clown-loving grandmother that likes to sew (she made my Rainbow vest for me)

I'm not sure what color combinations to use... My current look consists of my Rainbow Vest, Green Pants, Yellow Converse with Lime Green Laces, Yellow Hair, and Constantly changing Solid Color Tshirts... Green, Red, Blue, Orange, Purple, etc. I'm not sure where to go colorwise for a Hat.

Any Help or advice is gladly appreciated!

Thanks in Advance.

Razzle,
Awesome that you have a grandmother to sew for you. Unfortunately I don't believe that there are a many new patterns out of that style, they were very popular 10-15 years ago. However, here is a link to ebay listing many of the hat patterns that they have available, many of which are out of print. Check it out. The great hing about sewing your acessories is that you can have many hats of different colors once you find a pattern that you like. Hats are fairly easy to sew. Have fun.

As far as colors go, I would stick with a solid color for the hat with colorful accents (handband, etc.) But that's my 2 cents worth.

Miss D.

Hey RD,

You might check this one out and see if it would work for you.

www.simplicity.com
pattern 4083

It if does then if you watch the Hobby Lobby, Hancocks, etc. ads then you can buy it for $.99 or $1.99. They go on sale quite often and that's the only time I buy my patterns.

Some other pattern sites to check out are:
www.mccallpattern.com
www.butterick.com

Those are some very good tips, but can't you just push your hat out to straighten it? I really like the Simplicity 4083 for a top hat. What a great pattern ... and, as Carrie mentioned in another posting ... all the Simplicity patterns are on sale for 99 cents at Hobby Lobby ... perfect time to buy lots!!

The hats you have pictured would be easy for your grandmother to make ... she'll love being involved in your clowning.

I was wondering that too. Can you push it out like Nettie Belle suggests and then maybe add something around inside to stiffen it up like a stiff iron on interface. Check with your grandmother and see if she can think of a way to make it stand up again. If she can't stiffen it, she may be able to take it apart and use it as a pattern to make one exactly like it. Seamstresses can do wonders, right Nettie Belle?

The hat isn't destroyed... I pushed it back out and wore it yesterday... I'm really just itching for a new hat lol.

The hat came with a magic kit that I bought years ago... its something like felt covered cardboard. I added the Orange band of ribbon and the purple daisy to it myself.

Miss D- I am still developing my character and look the whole process continues to evolve and I don't think I'll ever be finished deveoping the character. Originally I had planned for a Rainbow "Coat of many colors" -forgive the pun-... however I figured the vest would be easier to make and wouldn't be as as hot. I would love a clown coat though. I just continue to add to my costume over time.

I do appreciate all that my very understanding, clown-loving Grandmother does for me. She gets a kick out of seeing me in full clown.
