I have a soap dish that I use just for powder... I pour some into it and load up my brush and apply it loosly to all areas of the face... then I go back with the same brush and press it in with a bit fimer tapping method...

I lightly touch all areas of my face ... if any of them still feel tacky I apply more powder.

I also powder between each color.

When Traveling I use a small tupperware dish for my powder.

Tip hat The Battle of the Sock vs. the Puff

I know I'm probably doing this wrong, but Bubbles and I do our whole faces, in all the colors, then set all at once. It wasn't a problem when we were using baby powder, but now we've gone to a "real" setting powder. We use Neutra set and notice that the colors will blend a bit. Whites now end up with some flesh tone in them. Nothing else about our powdering has changed.

Also, can anyone offer tips on powdering the eyelids? I must not be setting them well enough, because I will always get marks in the lids from blinking. It's not real attractive, and it's visible when I alter the shape of my eyes.
Well, it is kind of a double standard I have. I learned with the sock and have been using one for almost 20 years, so it is a comfortable habit. When I was working at the costume, magic, theatrical makeup shop I learned about the newer, better, professionally recommended method of the Neutra-Set with powder puff. It works really well and doesn't generate the clouds of powder that the sock does and gives many people more control. So that is what I generally recommend.

You might try using one side of your "powdering equipment" for the white areas and the other for the more colored areas.

Powder extra well as quickly as possible on the eyelids. That is a trouble area for many clowns.

Is speed really key here? Typically, the eyes are the first thing I do, but it's generally a good 20 minutes before they are powdered. Do you think I'd be better served powdering my eyes before moving on to my muzzle?

I powder with neutra set powder on a puff and brush it off with a shaving brush.
I also use Ben Nye Final seal and spray it on after I am finished doing all of the powdering.
Here's a trick I teach people when powdering: Slap the puf or sock against your hand first. Then, powder you face and then as soon as you lift the power sock, or puff, return it to you powdered hand. By doing this any makeup that you get on your puff will become set and will not be transferred to you face in the wrong place!
Cheers,
Scruffy

Can I just put a little powder in my hands and then once I do a light coat go back and use the sock method?

I had very oily eye lids and I only powder once after all colors are on. By the time I'm ready to powder the white on my eye lids has creased, so I take a small size (paint type) brush, blend the white back out to a smooth even color, then before I use my powder puff, I put a small amount of powder in the palm of my hand and use my index finger from the other hand to retrieve a little powder out of my palm and pat it on the lid just so I know I have a good coat on my eye lids. Then I use a powder puff that I have sprinkled with the baby powder.

Then before I remove the excess (with a nice big blush brush) I pat all areas of my face with my hands and add more powder like I did with my eye lids to any areas that are hard to reach with the puff. i.e.: creases at side of nose, furrows in the brow, etc.

The powder puff I have is extra large, about 7", this is just what I do.

Default Greasing your lip

Does anybody put grease make up on there lip? I put it around my mouth, but it just doesn't look right. I've seen pics of other clowns that you can't see there lips. What do you do?
(I know this doesn't fit the topic, but I didn't feel like making another one.)
Thanks everybody for your replies so for.

The only time speed is a key for me is when I am in white face. I want to get the make up set before a crease appears.

My auguste with the cotton ball is my most prefered, but if I do white face I will go back to the messy sock.
