Got a 'nuther wig question...
Maybe I can get some suggestions here. I shave my head in 'real life' (whatever that is ), and occasionally would like to wear a wig (or a fringe of hair around the side). Do any wig manufacturers make just the fringe on the sides, without the fabric cap on the top? I've got no hair to hide, so the fringe on the side might be a lot cooler. I've tried cutting the cap off a wig, but the remainder is too heavy for adhesive. What I think I need is just the hair tied to the netting, without all the heavier fabric parts.

I'm thinking you will be on your own with that. You will have to make it yourself. But that should be do-able. Sounds like you already have some wig hair cut up. Do you wear a hat? The hair could be attached to the hat.

if you are interested in looking like Larry from the three stooges then here is how I'd go about it.
I'd get the basic afro wig from a clown supplier... (Larocks has them at a good price) and I'd cut the actual wig cap into the shape I'd want it. (in your case that would be just cutting away the top section.
Then I'd coat the cut ends of the cap with a thin layer of "Fray Check" found in most fabric and craft stores.
I'd also get a couple of yards of tule fabric and spirit gum and remover. Simply tack the tule into the base of the newly shaped wig cap and apply the spirit gum to the tule. and stick it in place. Hold it there until its dry.
You'll have to reapply new tule each time... but if you do it after getting out of makeup and character then it won't be a hassle as you're trying to get ready for your next gig.
ANother option might be wig/toupee (sp?) tape... but I've never actually used that before.

Attaching some crepe hair to a basketball style of headband might work and it'd be sporty! (Or just cover the band well in the hair.)

The toupe tape will work if you create a light weight piece. It is sort of strong. If you use it with just straight doll wig hair it would work. Frey check...is temperary and intended for use during construction of a project and washes out. Liquid stitch on the othere had holds really well and is even easier to use.

Yes, although the Larry Fine analogy was the closest, but with less hair. Something about halfway between Larry Fine, and what Lou Jacobs had on his wig. Sort of a fringe, but lightweight so I can stick it on and take it off after the gig is over.
Does that help?

Staples should hold quite well, especially if you use an industrial staple gun.
Doc I got a headache that feels like someone is stabbing me in the head here and here and here....

You mentioned that you don't want the fabric top, but if you were able to cut out the top part and insert a piece of white cotton (being a natural fiber, it would wick away your sweat and keep you cool), it would no longer necessitate gluing it on.
The cotton would ensure structural integrity while letting you keep it on your head without any help from spirit gum.
And to match the white cotton to your skin, you can either dye it or use fabric paint. If you use dye, I've found that a combination of Rose Pink and Tan (from Rit) will make a nice neutral skin tone, but some folks have added a little of the Light Green if they are more olive-skinned. If you have more of a yellow tone to your skin, you can add some Peach to the Rose Pink and Tan.
Or, you could get a stretchy cotton skull cap to fit all around your head. Then cut the wig into the strip of fringe you want, and sew metal snaps around the inside. Sew the corresponding snaps to the cotton skull cap. Then, whenever the cap gets dirty, snap off the wig part and throw the cap in the washing machine. Since it's mostly cotton (with a little lycra for stretch) it should keep you cool. Just make sure that you dye the white cotton to match your flesh tone.

That's it!!! Nosey, all you have to do is have metal snaps attached to the sides of your head, then you won't have to worry about the wig being too heavy for the glue.
