SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW CELEBRATES ITS 2ND ANNIVERSARY WITH ICE SCULPTURE EXTRAVAGANZA
On August 26, the internationally acclaimed Slava’s Snowshow will celebrate its second year in New York City with a day of snowy festivities. The clowns from the hit Off-Broadway show will invade The Spiegel Garden in lower Manhattan, bringing with them a hundred snowmen sculpted from ice and in need of decoration
(from 9AM until they melt!!!). Children and adults are invited to come and cool off from this sweltering summer by decorating their own snowmen in celebration of this significant milestone. Carrots, buckets and scarves will be provided, although visitors are encouraged to bring their own unique decorations.
CLOWNS: GO IN COSTUME AND HAVE SOME FUN!!
Performed by an ensemble of clowns at the Union Square Theatre in New York, Slava’s Snowshow was originally created in 1993 by the Russian-born, Slava Polunin, who is considered by many to be the world’s greatest clown. The show stemmed from Slava’s early venture to take clowning out of the circus and into the theater and has since received numerous awards around the world including the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, London’s Olivier Award, the Edinburgh Festival Critics’ Award, Moscow’s Stanislavski Award, and Australia’s Sir Robert Helpmann Award.
The clowns of Slava’s Snowshow have a tradition of building snowmen wherever they go. The tradition began in Russia, where thousands of snowmen are built in a line up the main pedestrian street in downtown Moscow to the delight of passers-by. The yearly appearance of the snowmen marks the arrival of the world-famous Snowshow to Moscow. This tradition will be repeated in New York City in the dog-days of summer to help New Yorkers cool off and to celebrate the show’s second year anniversary.
The Spiegel Garden at the Fulton Fish Market (beneath the Brooklyn Bridge) premiered on August 3rd and remains open through October 1st, with a wide range of music and theatre for all ages. The full program can be seen at
