I do something similar. When I'm starting the magic portion of the show, I try to come up with a magic word that somehow pertains to the birthday kid. In the end, the magic word(s) are "Wow, _____'s (insert birthday kid's name) five (or however old the child is).

This is just another way you can make the birthday kid feel special throughout the duration of the party.

Checkerz - the three rope trick is called either My Favorite Rope Trick or Professor's Nightmare depending on the company marketing the trick. I have posted at least one line of patter that I use pretty regularly for P.N. and I may have posted two or even three. I play with my patter frequently with that trick. I can get 5 or 6 minutes out of P.N. without it feeling slow or labored.

Yoou might also tell a story, either one you make up yourself (with or without their help) or one they already know well, but you keep messing it up.

Ok so since this is my thread about upcoming events, I have an MS fundraiser that I'll be doing towards the end of July, and I need some help...
I wanted to make this a special event because a couple news stations will be there and it will get my name out, but that's not why I'm doing this event. My soon to be father-in-law has MS and I'm giving the lady a heck of a deal.
I need some suggestions on a couple really, really, simple magic tricks, and I was thinking about doing just some super easy balloons, just the basic dog, sword, etc.
What do you think? Is there anything special that you would suggests me doing? What kind of magic tricks? I have some tricks already, like thumb tips, d'lites, my favorite rope trick, and some sponge balls, do you think that will be enough?

Are you planning on doing walk around or a stage show? If you are thinking about walk around then you look pretty good with the magic you mentioned, although I alway load to gills and at the end wnder why I carried so much stuff when I didn't need it. For a stage show I would recommend larger effects. If there are more than 20 to 30 people they will have problems seeing what you are doing.

Keep working on your balloons. Balloons are great for an event like you mentioned but don't rule out crazy hats. There are plenty of fairly easy sculptures that only require 2 or 3 balloons which are much more effective in "Wowwing" the crowd. They are really worth it. For starters make a basic helmet hat and just attach an extra balloon or two to it in contrasting colors.

I always carry a bag or two of the hot pad loops, and a bundle of them on my wrist for the color changing loop trick. One of the few tricks I 'teach' people aka kids how to do. Plus I give them a couple of the loops so they can do it for their friends.

Take two of the loops, preferably of different colors... otherwise there just isn't much of a color change. I'll try to 'splain this without confusing you folks.

1. Hold one loop so it hangs vertically.

2. Insert the second loop horizontally through the first loop.

3. Take the ends of the loop you just put through the vertical loop, and drape the ends of that loop over your thumb.

4. Then make an O.K. sign with the particular hand you used to attach the loops to.

Ok, you should have your O.K. sign with a loop looped over it twice with the other different colored loop hanging dependently from the aforementioned loop.

5. Here comes the magic.... Pull on the bottom loop to stretch the whole thing out, be sure to keep the thumb and forefinger together so the loops don't come off.

6. Now reach up and grab 'one side' of the double looped loop over your thumb and pull it down. The bottom loop should change places with the top loop.

7. Rinse and repeat.

I probably made this much more complicated than it really is. I've taught it to kids as young as 3 or 4. Once you get the principle you'll have it down easy. Kids love this trick!

What are hot pad loops? Where can I get them? Is there a video on youtube on how to do the trick? It's kind confusing, but I'm a hands on clown!!

Try Michaels, Hobby Lobby or even a local craft store.
Good idea Mulligan

I looked and couldn't find any pics, what do they look like and are there any videos on how to do this trick? It sounds like a great trick.
