Well said Nettie. And a good suggestion also. Must be the blue roots.

Last evening my husband and I were at our monthly visit to the Nursing Home and a couple of young, (around 50 yr. olds) thought that it was naked night, I simply kept walking but looked at Funny Bonz (my husband) and started singing in a low childlike voice...
"Be careful little eyes what you see...."
Our Q to look away...
He did, but under his grease you could see..."Let me outa here!!"
This is a first, but surely won't be the last....Wish F.B. luck!!!

They have "naked night" in nursing homes? Hmmmm ... sounds like it might not be so bad afterall. I just hope I also have a computer in my room for ebay and Clown Forum.

I have been a nurse for over 30 years. Do not ask, insist that a staff member be present at all times. If they do not accomadate you they have no right to make you feel guilty. Supervised or not dementia and altzheimer patients can strike out at any time for no reason. Seriously consider you own and your friends safety. I have known nurses who have gotten broken jaws for just walking into a room. I myself have had a cup of hot coffee thrown on me by a patient who was most of the time quiet and gentle. I am not saying that all altzheimer pts are violent but enough are that you deserved to be forewarned.

The OP said something that rings very true. The staff reaction was delayed. As a former nursing student, I did clinicals with the rest of the class. The negligence really surprised me. I'm not trying to speak ill of everyone in that field because I know that there are a few who really care and who really want to make a difference. It must be hard on them, feeling suppressed by the majority and submerged in futility. It's one of the reasons I left nursing dreams behind me and went in to my first choice of work (mortuary sciences.)
Sorry it had to happen to you. That really bites.

Susan,
There are always lessons to be learned, and each time will be unique, but please remember the flip side (glass half full) Something in your presentation got that lady excited. I'm excited just trying to picture you and your BIG heart. I think the staff clearly should be more in tune with the patients. They were probably glued to you guys too. Hugging is always in order in my book, but remember, those fingernails can be sharp and not too clean. You're a bold one for sure.

You can not be affraid to go in there just because someone fell. I use to specialize in nursing home vists when I was Geoffrey girafffe. and I would go spend several hours in the Alztimers Unit the home I went to had a little walking path and the patients would take me out and walk me like they were walking a dog. Just make sure that if you do it that the activites director stays with you at all times!!!
