Newbie Pinky
I am so brand spanking new to clowning it's not even funny! I have no idea what I'm doing, and wish I had a mentor here in eastern North Carolina. But I've bought some books on clown ministry, and I am involved in clown communion at a church near here next week for Holy week. I am looking to visit nursing homes, etc, when I figure out exactly what it is I'm doing. Normally, I'm shy so I hope I can pull this off! God bless, Pinky

What part of NC are you in. There are a couple members here, they don't get on often. I'm in SC., and welcome to the group.

Welcome Pinky, Don't feel bad. Every one of us started in the exact same place as you are right now. Start by reading the articles and then what we call the archives... Also known as the old posts that are here in the forum. There is a wealth of information in there so take you time.
I recommend to about everybody that they check with their local library for a couple of very good books. Creative Clowning by Tony Blanco and Bruce Fife. Be a Clown by Turk Pipkin, Clown for Circus and Stage by Mark Stolzenberg. These are really good books to help you learn the basics of clowning, makeup, costuming and some of the other skills. The first one is the one to buy if you can. Strutters guide to clown makeup by Jim Roberts contains a full in depth look at makeup application. Finally, a good book to read is Called The World of Clowns by George Bishop.
You should be able to get any of these books through an Inter-Library loan system. Also, Ask us Questions here you will get a different perspective from our many members. each one of whom is glad to help you learn.
Welcome
Scruffy

Welcome, Pinky.
I agree with all that has been said AND suggest you take classes and attend conventions. Join a local Clown Alley if there is one close enough. Check the COAI website: Clowns of America International

Welcome to the Clown Forum. I am a new clown in Virginia, and some of the clowns recommended I check out the COAI 2008 International Convention in Richmond, VA in April. I would imagine that it would be close enough to North Carolina. The website is Convention

Hi! I'm in New Bern, NC. That's about 30 miles from Jacksonville (Camp Lejeune). If you hear of anyone near me, please pass it along. I wish there were classes near here, but I can't seem to find any clown schools.

Thanks, Mike. I don't think I could make it to that convention (lots going on in April), and being so very new, I think I'd be a fish out of water. But that's something to dream on....Good luck to you too. My mom lives in Sterling. I just moved here from Manassas VA. Small world!
