Welcome aboard beatdog. I've heard good things about the wisconsin La Crosse camp, but most people here seem to recommenced Moose Camp in Minnesota. I'll let the experts chime in, but there are a bunch of posts here about the subject if you want to do a bit of digging.

Wow Beatdog, Those are two completely different schools with two completely different approaches to clowning. What are you thinking of doing when it comes to clowning? Are you thinking about birthday parties or more Cirque du Solei style theatre? If you are leaning towards theatre then I would recommend NY Goofs. If you are thinking about all around clowning; birthday parties, parades, balloon twisting, face painting, comedy magic and that sort of thing, well then I think that Clown camp is a worthwhile learning experience but I would passionately recommend Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp in MN www.mooseburger.com Not only to you get a jam packed week full of fun, friends and mega learning, but you make contacts that you can call on throughout the year when you run into a problem or a question.

Can you tell us more about how you became interested in clowning and what you are hoping to do with your skills? And what part of LA are you from? There are a number of talented entertainers in your neck of the woods.

If you are in LA another place you might want to check out is the "Clown Conservatory" in San Franscisco at he Circus Arts Center there. Their main thing is a year long program on clowning for any situation, but they also do workshops.

But alot depends on what kind of clowning you are interested in. The two big ones are circus/theater clowning and hometown clowning. There is alot of great crossover between the two, but if you want to get the most out of a camp or workshop, you should probably figure out which you are shooting for.

Default thanks...

thank you for the replies...truth is i am not sure what i want to do with it...not birthday parties...not for a career...more for the fun of it...though the idea of some sort of volunteer clowning for kids in hospitals etc is appealing...thanks also for the tip about the mooseburger camp...that also looks like a good bet and it seems a lot of people on this website recommend it...
but i also like the minimal costuming/makeup of the ny school...i don't know if i want to go full on clown costume and makeup...
well i guess i have some time to decide and will do further investigating on this site and inside my head!
thanks again
by the way...i live in west la and did research the clown conservatory in sf...but it seems that they have more full time year long classes...and that wouldn't work for me...
just for some background info on me...i am a toy designer and sculptor and cartoonist...and taught myself to juggle years ago and even had a unicycle for a while...so i have some bit of a clown in my blood!
thanks again

One of the people who has taught makeup and NY Goofs is Mark Renfro, who also teaches makeup at Mooseburger Camp.

Ultimately, the way ones heads with makeup and costuming is more up to personal tastes than anything. I use both full auguste face as well as more minimalistic "new vaudevillian" style makeuping, while my costuming is generally more human scale than extremely oversized. There may be general trends at the various schools (at a more theatrically oriented school like NY Goofs or Clown Conservatory, you'll see different things in greater proportion than at a school like Clown Camp or Moose Camp), but you may also meet all kinds of clowns with varying approaches at any of the above.

They do sometimes have one day or weekend classes with specific focus emphasis, also.
