You don't have to go to clown school but that does speed up the process. As you read the posts here on the Forum and ask questions your clown will start to grow. Also there are plenty of books available on clowning in general as well as ballooning, face painting, improv, and most every aspect of clowndom.

Hi Kookie, I'm new too, not really a clown yet, but interested and this has been a great forum to meet some great people- friendly, interesting, etc. I get the impression that one nice way to start if it's more about having a great hobby you enjoy and making other people smile- is to see if there is a clown group/ organization nearby (if this interests you just ask here on the forum, other clowns are quick to help you find where to look) or maybe check with a clown already in business- and see if you can join/ tag along to volunteer- at churches, hospitals, etc.- maybe wear your costume and walk in a parade? That's the sort of thing I'd like to start with when I'm ready to get started- to meet people, build confidence, get experience- without taking so much of a scary risk as it seems like when you are starting your own business and building a professional reputation. Best of luck!

Kooky, you would really enjoy any clown school or conference you attended. You wouldn't believe how much fun they are and how much you learn. A lot of the conferences are weekend affairs, so they aren't a huge time commitment either. And I won't even mention the shopping!!
