Breaking in the new forum
What are some of your favorite magic tricks for an average birthday party?
I will start.
I use a change bag in just about every show. Many times I use the Mismade Flag with the change bag. - Mismade Flag - 3 silks: red, white and blue become the American flag.
For years I refused to buy a Spotty Bag because when I started out it seemed that everyone, and I do mean everyone was using this prop. I saw Spotty bag performed more times by more people that I thought possible. About two years I broke down and bought one since I hadn't seen one used for a while and I wanted a new routine. The dog-gone trick works. I get at least two groans and a laugh out of it most every time. Now I'm starting to get tired of it because I've done it so much. - Spotty Bag - A bag, one side is black fabric with with white polka dots and the other side is white with black polks dots. You have two scarves, one solid white and the other solid black. The object is to put polka dots on the scarves.
I add more as the thread grows.

favorite Magic....
coloring book, simple rubberband levitation of small rings, keys etc., change bag if I can make a little mess, I like to have kids pop, popcorn from the bag. but I also like to make other items into change bag type tricks, like with paperbags, you can glue one to the other but leave one side open which you hold together with your fingers and you can load paper type items in it,. These are a few.

I use a change bag,an optical illusion with colored cards,a stiff rope,a thumb tip ( silk vanishing - reappearing ) and sometimes rope to silk.
Any other ideas are welcome!

That sounds very interesting Saphire Sue. Could you please exasperated on the popping corn trick? Also the levitation? Spank-you, spank-you, spank-you!

As far as the paper bag thingy you've discribed, that gimmick can also be achieved with a box of cereal. Basically it's like the popcorn box routine. Just make sure to buy two boxes of cereal so the cardboard is the same color when you apply the new fake side to have that hidden compartment.

A fold and cut with fancy, colored, glittery tissue paper to reveal a star cutout. It goes with a poem I wrote, "Here's a little story, old man moon he told me, many moons ago....". I hand big scissors to the guest of honor which s/he (standing with me) can use to "help" do the magic. At the end I unfold the paper and frame the assitant, concluding the poem with words recognizing the real magic having been to discover within it, "The star of the show!"

oh I also do some type of torn and restore trick, ususally I start with a telegram over sized of course with the name spelled wrong or aniversary of something like that so the kids can correct me then tear and restore to the correct one.
Popcorn with the change bag , basically put kernals on one side the other preloaded with popcorn. If the kids are school aged I 'll mention school and have they learned about how rubbing there hands together generate heat and they all rub their hands then I have a group of volunteers rub their hands real fast then every rubs the bag and fast as they can, very easy to make the popcorn bounce out as the group tries to rub, looks like it popping out of the bag, but makes a mess on the floor so I can't do it every where

My favorites:
- change bag is always good!
- sponge balls - I love them!
- a trick where I crack an egg into a can and we make a cake on top of someone's head, but it turns to candy. (I forget what original the trick was called)
- magic coloring book (even kids who've seen it before get excited)
- a trick called "Tail Spin" from Sammy P Smith - I end up with a new tail and who doesn't want a new tail!
- I use the magic words "Stinky smelly socks" and socks keep appearing places where they're not supposed to be. And they're always stinky!
- I use Silly Billy's "silly wand" and "inflatable wand" and get hit on the head sometimes. Why do kids love to see me get abused?
