Same Trick Different Presentation
A friend of mine owns a magic/costume shop at which I help out. I have noticed that there are some tricks that I really enjoy doing for casual observers that I would not do as Fitzwilly, some that I do as Fitz that just doesn't seem to fit as "me", and others that I do both as me as as Fitz but the presentation is different and sometimes I even have developed completely different patter. Just a couple of the basic ones are 1) Professor's Nightmare and 2) the Svengali Deck. Color Monte is one I have great patter for as me but I haven't quite worked out patter for Fitzwilly.
Anyone else notice this?

Thank you for the information. Before I read your post I had never heard of your three basic tools of the trade.
"Some kinda wonderful tricks for presentations" as I was soon to learn while visiting the "Trick Store" your basic tricks are considered all time favorites.
In an answer to your question. "I think so. Just Jim can't perform anything he choose's" it has to fit his character and mood of the moment stylehe's working with.
Thanks for the continuing education that you provide through you posts.
Just Jim...

Magic is one of the hardest things for me to choose as I don't have any stores near me and conventions are the best places for me to get ideas [atleast there you can see it before you buy it], there are a lot I like but I know they just wouldn't fit me. I like card magic, but I don't think a country western, farm girl does much with cards, One I got a couple of years ago I'm just now using for select walk arounds is a cookie in which you change a penny to a dime {I use this as a give away ]. Works good with small groups 1-2 kids at a time, wouldn't work well for large groups I don't think, to easy for them to figure it out then.

Sue, try going to www.penguinmagic.com and www.ellusionist.com they both have video clips of many of their tricks. Also since I demonstrate a lot of magic tricks and many of my friends are magicians feel free to contact me on the forum or off. I will be glad to offer any insights I might be able to about tricks that catch your fancy.

A couple of fun pocket tricks that are great for clowns and people are:
1) The Hot Rod - Here you have a stick with six different colors (colours, for our overseas friends). Both sides appear to be the same. The viewer chooses a nember between one and six (instead of just choosing the color). The entertainer then changes all six colors to the color choosen, on both sides. Then because more colors are more exciting than just one the six colors are made to reappear on one side of the stick and the other side is left all one color. About $6.00
2) Coil & Ring - Here you have a small ring (the most common one sold is from Royal Magic and the ring is about 1 or 1 1/4 inch in diameter.) And a coil (Spring) about 2 inches long and about 3/8 inch in diameter. The ring in hooked on the coil and the goal is to remove the ring without bending the ring or unwinding the ring off the end end of the coil (because that might bend the end of the coil.) As the magician you can remove the ring and reinstall it at will, almost instantiously. When you hand it to your audience member they can work and work but most likely IF they get it off they won't know how they did it. One set contains two rings and two coils. About $2.50

Psychic Spinning Rings - This is another small pocket effect for walk around clowning or just general good fun for 1 to 4 or 5 people at a time.
The entertainer shows two small rings roughly one inch in diameter. These rings are amazing because they "stick" together with static electricity. If you rub them just right you are able to induce a very special magical force called reverse polarity static electricity. This causes the rings to stick together and even spin. Of course it only works sometimes and it is difficult so don't be suprised if the audience member can't make the magic happen. In fact usually it only happens for Fitz when he isn't looking. Soon as he turns to look at what he is doing it stops spinning and falls.

Hi, Fitzwilly -
I do Life And Fire Safety shows, and there are only a few magic tricks that I find can be tailored to what I do.
1. The Lota Bowl - the never-ending pouring of water from the empty bowl amazes kids and ties in great to cooling a burned finger with water.
2. Professor's nightmare - works well with Stop, Drop and Roll, or any other behavior that has 3 principal parts. They're all equally important - that's the basic lesson there.
3. Duck-Rabbit silk - if you have a fire in your house, duck down low and get out quick, like a bunny.
I can't use anything that has real fire - don't want to encourage elementary school-aged children to play with fire. The same with any other unsafe behavior.
Yes, I could do some magic just for magic's sake as an attention-getter, but.... ...The hardest part is to come up with safety-related patter.
We do both walk-around events and put on a stage show at each elementary school each year.
Any ideas come to mind?

I do a simular trick with beads instead of the hot rod, but it works the same. 6 beads make up the smallest magic wand and they pick a number between 1-6, and magically the beads all turn to that color.

Are there any specific points that you want to make? Bicycle safety, or fire safety...? I have not done much safety magic yet, however if you will break down a few main points you want to get across I will see what I ideas I can come up with. Then if anyone has a better idea we can work as a team and create a number of good bits.
