Portability...
Well, I discovered a problem. My skirt does not pockets! I rather like the skirt, and don't want to change it just yet so I was thinking of using a bag instead. (Dottie is quite a lady, she would probably carry a purse anyway.
Plus, I could work out some silly skit with a bag hanging around.)
Anyway, do you have any suggestions for a good, all purpose bag, (I'm thinking something like a messanger bag would work.) that won't be cumbersome, but still hold props.
I make duct tape purses....maybe that would be okay?
What do you use?

check out consignment shops and you may find a purse or bag that is more to Dottie's style. Also look at the seams on your skirt is it possible to have those pockets put in there that don't effect the look of the skirt?
I came across some spring loaded easter baskets one year, [I've got several things I carry props in depending on need] one is a butterfly which is more to Sue's prissy nature and one is a lady bug which is more to Sally's. Never know what you 'll find after christmas.

Sue, I checked the skirt. In theory, pockets could be added, although not very large ones (becuase that would mess up the shape. It's quite a slim skirt.) I think pockets that are actually big enough will end up looking like jodhpurs, and not in a good way. :?
Thrift shops and craft stores may be best...thanks for the suggestion!
I'll see what's hanging around at the after-Christmas sales...maybe somthing good!
(I did find a really cute glove-shaped purse, in red and yellow, but it was waaaay out of my budget.)

I dont know if a duct tape purse would fit Dotties lady quality. A bag with a big smile on it would be nice. Because you would have gags in there which would be funny and make people smile therefore=bag of smiles.

I think Brittany is right; while a duct tape purse is cool I don't think it quite fits with Dottie's old-fashioned style. (At least that's my image of her, she's your character after all!) My mother has a pattern for a little round purse, maybe you could make something like that (only larger)? Y'know, a giant dot I don't remember what brand pattern it was, but it must have been fairly recent.
Let us know what you come up with!

What about a shopping bag. Like from one of the department stores. Perhaps ask some nice young gentleman to help you with you bag.
Or you could play opposites and use something really out of character for laughs.
I have a "Bag 'O Tricks". (It's a medium sized brown paper bag with tricks in it). I also have a "Magic Juggling Bag". Do you see it juggling? Well, OF COURSE NOT! It's MAAAAAGIC, you're not supposed to be able to see how it works. I want to eventually pack up my show in an old colorful suitcase with stickers from different locales.

I have an old suitcase that I got from someone's attic. And I put stickers all over it. It looks very vaudeville. Pier 1 Imports had a package of stickers for $2 about 3 years ago. I don't know if they still do, but it would be worth a try. I have stickers for India, France, London, etc. Very cool!
Tim, do you have a Pier 1 near you?

Sue, I've been browsing eBay for hatboxes - what a wonderful idea! There are some really fantastic boxes that could be painted and decorated.

Well, let's see... their website shows several near me. I'll have to drop by and check that out sometime. Thanks for the tip.
Hmm... I can see it now.
"Wow, have you been to ALL of those places, Mister Clown?"
"Nope. I bought a bag of stickers at Pier 1 for 2 dollars!"
