I've used Hydro - it's a bottled liquid. I got it from Bubba's clown supplies.

I'd like to suggest a different tack all together --

Try going to bubba's website - bubbasikes.com
and even call him.

He has great video called "You Look Marvelous, Darling" and it gives some great makeup tips. Then I would ask Bubba to recommend some makeup for you - the cream-based makeup instead of the more old-school grease paints.
With the cream based makeups you don't have to do cut-outs of the white for your colors.

He also talks in detail on the video about powdering, both from which powder to use to how to use the powder puff instead of the traditional sock.

As a tramp clown I do a lot of blending of the colors on my face - whites and rouges especially.

And one other thing - remember that your makeup is not a mask, instead it is to be an enhancement of your expressions - it should follow your natural facial movements to help project your emotions to the back of the room. As such, play close attention to your "smile" lines and those areas of your face that move with your smiles and frowns etc. Those natural movements are where your makeup lips, eyes and other features should go to help enhance those movements.

Hope this helps some!

The Hydro-cleanse that I am aware of is a Ben Nye product. Most Ben Nye distributors should carry it. We do and I have used it at the store to remove makeup after I have been demo-ing for customers but I have never splurged and bought some for Fitz. Although with Christmas just around the corner...

Hey everybody I got some good makeup I went out to a local place and they had some Ben Nye clown makeup so I bought up a bunch of it, But here's a funny story when we arrived to the place it was called the ABC dance supply co. so I was a little weary about going in so my wife went to check for me and came out and said they have it so while I was paying for everything the cashier said we have alot of men come in here but most of them are not as manly as you, So on the drive home my wife said to me I'm mad at you I said why she said because you bought more makeup now than I have in the last 5 years, Boy did I laugh...HARD, anyway I'm putting some pics here the first is just my plain ugly mug I hope that your screen don't shatter when you see it hehehe the next two are my first attempt with the good makeup and as you can see I made alot of rookie mistakes but the next few look alot better so any advice would be greatly appreciated, Many more pics to follow.

Gay dancers and theater types! Gotta love it!

Anyway, you manly man with all that makeup you....

I like the first and last attempts - with those particular photographic perspectives and facial expressions - best.

Obviously, the lines need to be refined and straightened, but I think you have the right idea in these cases. Simply try to follow your natural facial lines and you'll, ultimately, do alright.

I would say get rid of the red stuff underneath your eyes. It only draws down your face, rather than lifting up. Almost like if you have a shiner. Instead, take that red and think about what you might be able to do with it to accent your cheek bone and smile, sort of like how a woman would use rouge on her naturally made up face.

In the last picture, your face almost seems strangely sad, but in a good way. Kind of a wonderful melancholy. It could be the start of a hobo type character.

Regarding makeup on facial hair, it is a difficult task. Make sure that everything is well trimmed first, if you're going to do that. For instance, in the first picture, one can see a lot of loose ends hanging over the top lip with that white. It looks icky and has to be cleaned up.

Actually, makeup over facial hair is always a challenge (even in the oft necessary eyebrows, let alone mustache or beard) to cover well. While it can be done, you may want to consider instead incorporating your natural beard into the character look.

I'm not generally a big fan of blue on the beard. One of the clowns on this site does accomplish an interesting take by using only blue highlights rather than full cover. But that is the exception. Generally, what I find in anything other than a white muzzle cover over that area is that it offsets the face so seriously as to create a stark appearance which seems off kilter and unbalanced, unnatural. Now, I did once see a clown attempt a face that tried to address this sort of thing by kind of inverting the traditional whiteface to mostly blue with lighter colored insterspersed. I suppose that sort of thing could have potential, but it would also be a LOT of work to find the right take which could make it go and communicate "clown", without coming off as simply as "Smurf" or a member of the Blue Man Group.

In the end, when you're starting out, recognize the wisdom of the old dictum "less is more." Be playful. Experiment. Try lots of things to see what works and what doesn't. Then simplify - repeatedly - until you come up with some essentials which are easy enough to accomplish a basic look. These can, from there, serve as building blocks to accent and build out something more elaborate in the long run which has a greater breadth of expression, if it is the way you wish to go.

I definitely like the second look the best, but I agree with Koo Koo Ka Choo with the red under the eyes.

I would think that with that much blue in your beard, you will be sporting a blue beard even when you're not in clown. Is it hard to get it completely out???

I used to think my white face make up turned a streak in my hair white; then I realized it was never going away.

You are definitely making progress ... you could offer to SHARE your new makeup with your wife ... then she won't be so jealous. It takes awhile to get your face the way YOU like it. My first pictures look like SCARY CLOWN ... I just hope none of the children had nightmares after hanging out with me. NOBODY TOLD ME, though ... I don't know how I thought it was acceptable to look that way in public. Even scarier than when I don't have ANY makeup on, and I certainly wouldn't go out in public like that.

Keep up the good work ... you're lookin' good!!

I like your last two pics best but like the others said the red dont look to good they kinda make it look like you were hit in the eyes I like how you did with your faceal hair it is harder to get out but a good brush & some shampoo or Bodsy was will get it out for you plus for me at lease haveing the hair a bit shorter & trimed up tight makes it look better when the greasepaint is added & easyer to clean out

Good start, but like the others I'd leave off the red around the eyes [I remember a quote, some once said about being careful of using red around eyes because it can make you appear angry, and blue or green lines near the mouth can make you look sick] I kinda like the blue beard, but I'd would like to see you with it natural, with maybe some white around the mouth, then with some blush on cheeks. like you've been in the sun, just an idea..

Have you visited some of the clowning association's websites? (www.coai.org , www.midwestclowns.net ) They usually post pictures of the competition winners. Sometimes you can get some good ideas there. Another place I recommend is the costumer's websites like www.mooseburger.com and Betty Cash's new site, I think another one is Costumes by Barbie (I like her costumes, not sure of the website.) Even though the pictures are of the costumes I look at the faces of the wearers.
