Everyone has different ideas about makeup, but my personal preference is Jim Howle makeup. I order most of my makeup from Clown Antics www.clownantics.com, but there are other websites that sell makeup as well.

Also, for my lips, to avoid powdery lips, I use Revlon Color Stay lipstick rather than clown makeup. It stays all day, feels fine on your lips, and you can tuck the tube in your pocket, just IN CASE you need a touchup. It also has gloss on the end to keep your lips moist. I HATE the way clown makeup feels on my lips and figured this out early in my clowning. After I put it on, I put a cotton swab in my teeth to keep my lips from touching each other, and that way, the red doesn't get on my top lip. After a few minutes, it is set and you're free to add the gloss if you want to. That's another of my own personal preferences. I'm sure I'll get bashed BIG TIME on Clown Forum for telling you to use regular lipstick, rather than clown makeup, but it's the way I like best.

Anyway, please send pictures ... WE LOVE PICTURES HERE!!

Good luck.

First things first:Get rid of that Halloween stuff. It is a great way to practice, but If you try to perform with it, It won't set with powder, and It sweats right off. Definitely mom friendly in the clean up department!

I reccommend that you find a local supplier to purchase makeup from. Generally online and "brick and mortal" prices on this stuff are pretty close and a good rapport with your local costume shop has many advantages beyond price alone. Namely, good will and possibly future gigs through referrals. Here's what you need:

Clown White
Individual colors red and black
A good black liner pencil and sharpener. Line width is a matter of choice.
A good flesh tone, If you're an Auguste.
baby powder, or setting powder if you prefer. Make sure there in no cornstarch in the powder!
A few makeup sponge wedges.
And old tube sock, Put the baby powder in it. and tie the top shut. If you use a setting powder, don't put it in a sock! (Too wasteful.)
A dusting brush to remove loose powder.(I prefer to use a shaving brush)
baby oil (to remove makeup.
This is a basic list of makeup and supplies. Each of us would look at this list and offer other suggestions. I do recommend that you get at least a 2 oz clown white and 1 oz cups of red and black. I don't recommend the color wheels that have white combined with other colors. Simply because you don't want to contaminate the white with other colors and it is nearly impossible with a color wheel!
Best of luck!

Actually, I found it to be a very worthwhile and helpful suggestion that I just might try.

Pick up Strutter's Guide to Clown Makeup for a good tutorial on "how to." As far as product goes, you want to look towards Mehron, Ben Nye, or ProFace makeup. For powder, you can use the specialty setting powders from these companies, also, or just plain baby powder. But make sure it is plain powder without cornstarch added.

You might find a copy of Stutter's at your local library, it has great tips and guides for make-up. Just rember your face is a work in progress. Practice Practice Practice is the key.

One of the thinkgs that I have found for taking off the makeup. Baby oil works great but I didn't like the mess and then I had the problem of getting rid of the oil. I tried the creamy baby oil, better but still a ways to go, Ponds cold cream worked well but a little expensive. I was talking to theatre groups at the store and someone recommend baby shampoo. It is designed to break down the oils in the hair so it does a good job of breaking down the oils in the makeup. I have a fairly soft sponge, apply a little shampoo and gently masage into the makeup. This generally turns it into a soupy grey mess. I bought a nice thick wash cloth in a less than appealing color when they were clearing them out at the store and wipe, rince and repeat if neccesary. Pretty quick and fairly easy. I generally use baby wipes around my eyes.

Yup ... I use baby shampoo too. It's great and tear-free. I like the Mary Kay oil-free eye makeup remover for around my eyes. It's $14 per bottle, but it lasts A LONG TIME. There is no tax. If anyone wants some, I have a connection.

I use that first around my eyes, do a once-over with baby oil until I look like some scary freaky monster, then I hose down with baby shampoo in the shower. For a final, I rinse with Pond's cold cream the kind with the green top that needs to be washed off. After all that, my face is as soft as a baby's butt.

I am curious about another post I saw somewhere about a better way to apply setting powder than a sock???? I have always used a sock but if there's a better way I'd love to hear it. Thanks

With the setting powders, since the talc is ground so much finer, a sock is really wasteful. Now this method can be used with baby powder as well. You use a regular makeup puff pad, one of those round velor type things, pour a bit of powder onto the pad and rub it in. Then pat the face followed by pressing the powder into the makeup, and brushing off the excess. Ben Nye - Netrualset, Mehron - Colorset Netrual, and Proface - Netrual setting Powder.
