Default Hello Every body!Wanna help me? :)

ok. Hello every one This is Dean from Turkey. I have been looking over the net for a good place and I now found it... I am 25 and I am a young theather actor here... NOw I have been clowning about 10 times...And its not like your clown shows...Bit simpler...Cause the clown in Turkey do not have only clown shows...clowns are generally to help the people around about the kids...and they(we ) perform small shows...Any way..so the point I am trying to come is I know only very simple couple of games...

But now...As an actor, we are starting a new play soon in istanbul...The story is about a clown saving his circus from the bad men...The play Has many lessons to give to the children..But as a clown, specially as a professional circus clown I can not play the simple games to the children... I need some good tricks...some good advice...the feelings of an old circus clown...and if any one can tell me where I can find some good clown show clips... Shortly ı need your help to be a proffesionnal clown in a week or two... so do you think you can help me? I really need help
Thank you all for even for reading this..

Default Okay. I'll try.

Welcome Dean.
I will try to help you. If I am understanding you correctly you will be portraying a Clown in a Play? First read trhe section on Circus lingo. It is authentic, and MAy help add authenticity to your role. I guess the first thing to do would be to cover the traditional stereotypes of clowns.Again, these aren't necessarlliy true.

First, All clowns are happy go lucky characters on the outside to cover the deep sorrow on the inside. Ths Angle is played in many different ways. Like suffering from a love gone wrong, or some other deep seated tragedy that occured to them.

Second, Clowns are unhappy with their station in life and desire greater things that they cannot attain.
Third, Clowns are predatory, sinister people that hide behind a mask to prey on innocent people.

These will give you an insigth of how people percieve clowns. If you go to our post on walkarounds, props,It should Help you find a few tricks to help add to your character. I suppose it would work to portray the clown as a normal fool on the outside, yet very wise at heart. Learning to juggle may be out of the question. Clowns do help people here in our country also. We are descendants of the court jesters of old who gave great wisdom by showing the folly of things. Our best used tool is pantomime, It is easy to do and a search online may help you to learn some basics. We also use exaggeration of our facial expression to show emotions.
I hope this helps you, Dean. If there is any way else I can help you I am glad to. See if you can find some Circus footage. If you can somehow get me a synapsis of the different scenes. I willtry to offer suggestions.
I hope this helps you.
Scruffy[/b]

Default Hello!

Hiya Dean, welcome to the clown forum! (big wave)

Whoa look out!......(splash) Here's a towel... waka wka wka...

Seriously tho, like Scruff was sayin', there's a ton of information here, a really good resource that Dave the Webmaster has done an awesome job on...

I'd volunteer to help, but I don't have any circus clowning experience. The walkarounds were a good suggestion, and like Sue said, if you give us the message you want to give to the children, maybe we can help you improvise...

first of all I have to thank you all.. and specially to scruffy too.. now ok I will tell you the stroy shortly...

This is an clown at the age of about 55.and he has been in that circus for like 25-30 years...At the first years of job in the circus he falls in love with the dog trainer girl.they do love each other but they dont get together..cause the girl asks to leave that circus life and get married with her..and find a job some where else..But the clown doesnt want this.cause he loves the children so much..He is living to make the children happy..so they just go on living until the age of 55 as two loving friends..and this is the time where the play starts...

The boss off the circus leaves the circus to his son cause he is to old to manage it...Mean while in the play with flash backs we see that the son use to want to be a clown when he was a kid.And his best friend was the clown. But one day the dad comes and tells the kid of cause he is trying to be a clown.HE thinks that he should do some serious job after a good grade in school. And after that days arguement the kid starts to hate the circus.....

ANy way lets come back to the day.. The clown does some tricks mean while the play...And this clown is a wonder of getting old..cause he cant do every trick as good as he use to...he oftenly dreams of the past good days and great shows...this id his physcology..Oh and a main point again...This clown has a puppet clown..that he speaks to when he is alone..

Well ok gettin back to the story..the new bos of the circus(the son) will sell the circus to couple of bad men.and the people which will buy the circus are gonna get rid of the old animals and old people that works in the circus(which is manily the clown and dog trainer). So the old boss(the dad) the clown and the dog trainer lady do a plan and make the son get rid of hisideas and make him love the circus again...

Yes this is the story shortly.. sorry for the wrong written words... and thanks for allof the help again... you lot allready helped me so much..and am sure will bye fornow..se you tomorrow

Default Okay, Some random observations...

Dean, Sounds like a fine play.
Are you playing the clown in both age roles? As a young clown, Walk lightly and put a spring in yoursteps. Use big, exaggerated movements; be wild and spontaneious! If Children are in the play then get down on their level by squatting down on your haunches. As an older clown exaggerate less. Stoop to meet small children, be more loving and less wild as an older clown. You have more experience on your side and less youthful energy. Walk slower. You have carried the weight of your love and devotion for this girl for many years. You are burdened by what the circus will become under this owner ship. Yet as a clown, When perfomance time comes every other emotion, problem, and sorrow disappear.
The puppet can be the sage voice of the clown. The clowns great wisdom is spoken by the puppett to the clown. There is also the relationship between the evil boss and the clown, They were once friends;and the boss could still in his heart desire to be a clown. And envy the clown for having the freedom of being true to himself and not have to answer to the father. would assume that had the owner's son become a clown; he would have been a great one.
I do not know what type of gags you are planning to do as the clown. Doing them slower, with smaller movements coulld be used to show that the clown is starting to slow down.
The love could be shown effectively through pantomine to help convey his feelings for the girl.

I hope this helps you Dean. If it the play is taped, we here at the clown forum would love to see it! The Webmaster would know how to do that.

Now go and make this character part of you! Give him life, and purpose.
and As we say here and the states, Break a leg!
