Well Vann, right now I would start by reading as much as possible and not really start thinking about the big shoes and fancy costume yet. You can pick up a basic set of professional makeup for $20 or less, that would be the bsic colors of treatrical clown makeup (also called grease-paint) and powder to set the makeup. Real clown makeup is not like Halloween makeup, it will not dry on it's own, you will need to "set" it with powder. One way is to get a powder puff like women use with their makeup. Get a bottle of TALCUM powder (like Wal-Mart baby powder) some powders are cornstarch and you don't want those, it has to be talcum powder to work with the makeup. After you put on your makeup you put a little bit of powder on the puff and pat your face making sure the powder covers ALL of the makeup. Go back over the makeup again with the puff, this time pressing the powder into the makeup. Smile at yourself in the mirror, and then you can take a soft brush (a brush used for ladies blush powder works well) and lightly brush off the loose powder. Now your makeup should stay on for a few hours.
To take the makeup off you will need to use baby shampoo and/or wet wipes. Regular soap and water won't work. Make sure you use an old wash cloth or rag because it will get stained.

Shop Goodwill, or other thrift stores in your area...

Many clowns get their start in a thrift store; and it's really a resource that you can pretty much use throughout your entire clown career....

You can generally toss together a "starter suit" for under $20

tmyers.com has makeup, noses and balloons. Almost every clown I know started with a thrift store or yard sale costume. If you know someone who sews you can look into that too.

Yeah. Think "thrift store" and think "recycle." Go visit flea markets and garage sales. At thriteen you have time to collect stuff little by little. Go find books on clowning and read 'em.

Remember that a clown is not merely a red nose, some makeup and bright clothes. You can be clown without any or all of those things. Work on your skills, (you choose them, don't let anyone else tell you "You have to do ____ if you are a clown") work on you character (which is basically you anyways) and above all make People Laugh!!!

LaRocks Fun and Magic Outlet is where i get all my clown & balloon supplies. I think their prices are very reasonable. And yes, Goodwill or thrift stores are probably your best bet for costumes to start.

Well with all due respect the title does say "Superior Clown Supplies" You can't get more superior than PMO.

Here ... Have some pie

I actually started out with Goodwill Pants... I pulled the shirt and shoes from my own closet (Bright colors and chuck taylors work wonders... Now I'm wearing a solid bright colored shirt (from Walmart(Short Sleeves), and Old Navy (sleeves) depending on weather)

Still wearing my thrift store green pants, I wear a rainbow striped vest that my Grandmother and I made together, A yellow PMO wig, and a Black Top Hat, and yellow Clownmart Shoes... White fingerless gloves and various flowers and buttons accessorise.

Ditto to what the other said about costuming, at 13 if you spent lots on one costume, good chance you'd need a different size in a year.

as far as make up goes I'd check out Bubba's Clown Supplies: clown makeup, comedy magic, Fun item he has a beginners kit for the lite auguste, has everything from liner, ben nye make up, blush, setting powder etc. I can't remember the price but it's a good deal, it's what I have my jr.s order, it cost a little more than the $12-15 kits but has more practical uses I think.

Nose in my humble opinion are fine painted on, but I like pro-nose myself, but you need to try them on the find your size and style that suit you other wise you could spend $ on noses you don't like.
