Default your make-up

What kind of make up do y'all use?
What type would you recommend for a first-time clown?
Thanks so much, and hello everyone!

There are a lot of brands and a lot of opinons, nost of them right. The important thing is to use a theatrical quality make up refered to as greas paint. Some brands are mehron and pro face. And then each of them have diffeerent formulas. Some work better on delicate skin or older skin. You can buy it on line or at a local theatrical supply store. Don't waste your time and money with water based or halloween make up.
You should apply a thin coat of the make up. enough to cover but no build up. pat to smooth and when it is all even and smooth you apply baby powder to set the make up.
hhmmm, now I have forgotten the rest of your question.

Mehron is a good starting place. I use a mixture Mehron and Ben Nye products. But both are good. There is also Jim Howle and Proface. Excellent makeups that are generally a bit pricier; but a loaded with moisturizers, natural ingredients and other good things.
The best advice I could give you is not to waste your money on the cheap stuff that you usually find in the Halloween stores and costume shops. It simply will not work, it is water based and can't be set with powder.
Most costume shops have the better stuff. usually it is in the counters, not on the walls.

Excellent advice from Pixcoco and Scruffy.
Pick up a copy of Strutters book on Clowning for make up tips.

Thanks! So Mehron is a good brand? I figured that the cheap halloween stuff wasn't much good.
Stick or tube? which do y'all prefer? And should I order on-line or buy in person?
Thanks so much! Oh, and what colors would you recommend to start out with? I know I will need clown white I am going to get red and black but is there any other colors I should get? Sorry I'm asking so many questions!

White, red and black are the three main colors that you will probably use if you are going to be a white-faced clown. If you want to try the auguste face you will probably also want to pick up an "auguste" color, (one of the various flesh tones) that is reasonably close to you skin tone. A way to soften the harshness that sometimes comes across with the white face look is to add a light rouge powder to the cheek area after the rest of your makeup is completed and powdered.

One thing...the red comes in different shades. I found the one just called RED is more of a blue undertone red and I like it for me. They also have one called RBR (code for realy bright red I have been told) which has a more orangey look to it. Things like this make me want to pick them out in person. They may also have some you can test out on your hand to see how it feels.

I use Jim Howle makeup. It feels like cold cream fluff! It goes on so SWEET!
