Just to let all you UK clowns know about this week long course in Sheffield coming up.

Monday 29th Sept to Friday 3rd Oct, 10am – 5pm
£180, £150 (members)
Tutor: Fraser Hooper

A 5 day course with Fraser Hooper
What makes a great clown? How do you create a show, hold an audience and get them to stay? Starting with rhythm and play, participants will quickly discover the joys of seriously clowning around in a practical workshop that shows you how to build material into comic routines.
Topics covered will include working the audience, developing style, directing and object theatre. Clowns on film will provide an additional feature to the class plus there will be an opportunity to show work to an invited audience.

The website for Greentop Circus is greentop circus or for the man himself Award winning clown, contemporary clowning, international mime artist and street performer

Cheers

As far as I can see, I think that workshop is based on the theatrical approach they have for clowning in Europe. It's quite different from the clown workshops they do in the States, where they focus on the technical part of the subject too.

Any opinions on that?

You're probably right. I think that the idea and practice of clown likely differs around the globe, with the American focus on children/family entertainment and party clowns, perhaps, being unique in its strong U.S. emphasis. Which is why most of the schooling in these areas are primarily centered here but harder to find elsewhere in the world.

That said, any type of theatrical training in clown which one could get might also be well worthwhile in helping one to develop a character and useful skills.

But, otherwise, you may just be stuck with having to come to the States for the kind of thing which you are looking for.

I think that theatrical training is very helpful too!

It s just some clowns here are stuck to this and don t know anything about technical skills that a clown should have. Most of the greek clowns have some kind of theatrical education and usually don t know anything about auguste, whiteface, balloon sculpting, magic etc.

Check this out: Gaulier Workshops 2007 to have an idea.

In this presidential election season, "I feel your pain!"

There is a clown, Triki Miki, who runs a children's party/event management agency in Athens who is a Moosecamp alum and recently posted to their email list, Perhaps some counsel can be discovered via that route.

Even appears to have recently registered at the clown forum. This looks to be the website: http://www.trikifun.gr/Triki%20Miki%20and%20Friends.htm

We would love to see you at MooseCamp if it works out for you Sax. (I've got to get use to calling you that instead of KG.)

Got the same here in a holland. The clown workshops around here are certainly helpfull in the theatrical way. But I really would like to get some more education entertainment and technical wise. But this is very hard to find on this side of the globe. So I'm thinking as well to make a trip to the U.S next summer. Or organising something ourselves around here in Europe is a great idea Nino. An idea I would certainly like to join. Anyway also seriously thinking about travelling to Sheffield. Sounds good.
