Symbol question

I'm noticing that on the forum, Everybody's got symbols- balloons, crowns, etc- that automatically pop up by the name- and also titles: Newbie, or Grand Poobah, or etc... At least I think they're automatic-

What do they mean?

Do they rank you by time spent on the forum since you signed up, number of posts, or something else?
