Thanks! in my costume, (so far), I show skin because I wear a pair of overalls with a scoop neck shirt. That's a lot of skin to cover with makeup. I don't see myself ever "competing", so I suppose I won't worry over being a "dirty-necked" clown. Sounds so nefarious!

Rules for clown convention "competition" are, in some ways, really based more on what looks good for the historic "picture clown." But even excellent picture clowns from circuses didn't always look as ideal in everyday working environments.

The key is to look good in presentation to whatever your audience. Some things are common sense. Others are nuanced insights. Then there are things which are just far out and hyper. It's understandable that when there is some sort of contest, there have to be rules for adjudicating it fairly.

Now, that said, you could get a collar which would cover up the neck if you liked. That would take care of cover. In fact, if you were to get a collar in a contrasting color (maybe yellow) it could really bring out even more in your costuming, I think.

Thanks, Tim. I can understand the competition thing with rules. I have a ruffle collar (old fashioned kind that I made myself) but it doesn't go with the casual pink overalls. I made a bow tie and I use that to cover most of my neck. I'm learning all the time!

I noticed the bow tie in your photo and I do like it. I think it gets at what I was talking about in providing a contrast.

What I meant by collar was something more along the line of a cover collar (usually they come with a hood):

Or, similarly, a bib might do the trick. For example:

Tim, thanks for the suggestions. I knew what you meant by "collar"; quite frankly, that look has always kinda creeped me out LOL. I do like the bib. I'm saving my $$ for when I get to moose camp. I'll do some shopping there, and perhaps by then, I'll actually know what I need!

Admittedly, I've always found it kind of odd too. I suppose that the idea is that it is supposed to be otherwise covered up by a wig and costume, so you don't notice how strange it seems alone.

I prefer to shop in person, myself. That way, you can get more of a real idea of how something will go with your character, what kind of fit it will be, and all.

That was a good video, but Willace has the right idea about "rules" ; Most of them should be considered guides, not something engraved in stone, although his two rules should be.
