I figured I should give a little more info on what was used in the costume.
I spent around $35 originally on fabric and ribbon(trim) for the jacket. The orange and blue have a bit of a texture. I also had to purchase the iron-on interfacing. There is a satin lining inside the arms to make them easy to slip on. The inside-cuffs are made of a red poplin and are hidden pockets.
I later went back and bought purple poplin for the collar, but went with the black & white stripes instead. I also had to spend an extra $5 on ribbon and more thread when I ran out.
The Black & White is actually a horrible bedsheet that was destined for the "garage sale pile" - so it may fade with time. I'll have to be careful. I did use cotton fabric, which is a no-no, but I couldn't resist. If it wears in a few years I'll have to sew a new one!
I don't have the number of the pattern, but as I said it was difficult to follow for a non-sewer. An online sewing dictionary was useful, but still the whole pattern seemed to be missing a section (the striped lining on the inside). So I had to improvise there. I cut the jacket a bit larger than the "XL" size.
Once it was all put together, I sewed on the blue fabric to the edge of the black&white lapels. Added all of the trim and made the pockets larger than neccessary. Overall good stuff.
The pants were "Chefs pants" which are black&white with a well-known-but-I-forget-the-name pattern on them. I bought these at the thrift store with the red shirt, tie, small straw hat, and a funky satin vest for $7. Good deal there. Added on some spare blue fabric and ribbon and ta-da!
The red shirt is embroidered, and I'll cover those up or just buy another shirt sometime. The red hat was from the dollar-store - it will fall apart easily but it's good "for now". I'd still like a better belt and some suspenders.
Oh, and yeah - the jacket is HOT. Unfortunately. I'll deal with it. hopefully
So.. all together the costume cost around $50, which is half the cost of the shoes :O
