It will get easier, with time.

You'll also develop a repertoire of things - gags,
handshakes, funny bits that will come more and
more naturally to mind as you keep doing this.

It might help to keep a cheat-sheet of ideas with
your makeup kit and review it while you put
on your makeup.

re: cheat sheets

I usually write a few jokes on index cards and keep tape inside the top so when It's open only I see them, but I can refresh my memory, It's always there on the tip of my tongue but some times it needs a little push

The index cards are a great idea -- you can periodically
switch gags in and out as you check what works and what
doesn't.

Since our group teaches Life and Fire Safety, we keep a
word document with Safety Tips and Questions to ask
the kids - then reward them with stickers and such.
Some of our clowns are pretty new at this, so we give
them their own "cheat sheet" of these questions.

We thought about making some sweat bands with
things on them, like the professional football quarterbacks
do.

Didn't Johnny Carson keep index cards with jokes on them
and throw them out if they bombed? And they weren't
hidden away as cheat sheets, but he read them right
there in front of the audience? Could have been some
other late-night tv host, but there's potential comedy
bit right there.
