The one thing I have noticed is the more I do clowning the

more I enjoy it and the less self conscious I am. It is like

other jobs in a sense that at first you are not comfortable with

it, and it takes time to feel confident.
I feel exactly the same way.

Welcome! Glad to have you here! You look great! I can say from experience, I'ts fun having more than one clown in the family. I have also rubbed off on my spouse and family. I have all 3 of my kids doing it. My sister just started and my hubby isn't far behind. He already makes all the props and does face painting and balloons. He just has to get a costume that fits his character. I'm still a little shy but I get a little better each time I do a show or party.

Hi Sassafras;
Welcome to this gang of thugs, villians, and cutthroats (Of which I'm proud to be one of).
As most know, I started clowning at around age 50. Well for an event recently, my wife wanted to go in clown with Patch, Pookie, and myself (county fair, last June for the Nevada Baptist Association) So we found an old striped sundress she had and went shopping for the other necessities (wig, nose, etc.) and she took the name Dinky. Patch helped her with her makeup and we went to the fair (50 miles away). Patch did face painting, Pookie and Dinky worked with the kids and maintained the line, and I did walkarounds and gave out candy.
I say all this to say this, My wife (Mary) was, and still sweetly shy but she did a bang up job and made me proud. and she had a good time at it. She doesn't want to attend conventions, (She did attend the closing banquet at the Clown adventure here in Vegas and had a great time) or clown regularly
but she has been infected and probably will again.
YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Mrs Scruffy
After reading some of the other post I guess we have something in common
When I first started I was very shy and also didnt want any thing to do with balloons but having a mentor that was willing to help me I managed to overcome both fears And now I am outgoing and doing balloons is my thing

As far as being a guru Thanks guys but I am only passing on things that some clowns that I respect have taught me and have worked for me
It takes a lot work to be a good clown but is well worth the effort

Thanks to everyone! I could spend over an hour responding in turn to each of you.

I do feel lucky to have Scruff's influence. In the clown class we're taking, I feel like I have an advantage over the others because he's taught me so much already. Sometimes, depending on my mood, I have all kinds of ideas popping around in my head. I try to stifle it so I don't appear like a know-it-all.

Scruff likes the ideas that I've thought up and think we could incorporate some of them.

I have a long way to go to conquer my hesitancy around others. When the instructor said we'd be doing a skit, I got a knot in my stomach because I don't like being in the limelight. But I've got to learn to get used to it.

Default Hi again

If an instructor would ask me to get up and do a skit I would

feel nervous also. I am more comfortable when I am in

character and then I naturally do silly things or do a

skit. I dont feel the pressure. You sould very similiar to me.

If you ever want to chat let me know. For me I had a lot going for

me except my "nerves" kept getting in the way. I tried to go to

as many birthday parties as I could to help other clowns. I went to

face painting events and asked if I could give it a try. Only

after doing so many events did I start to feel comfortable. Believe

me it wasnt right away. I am still new so the nerves creep up

here and there but it is much better.

Take care. Darsee
