Summer tends to be busier because people are always looking for an excuse to throw a party in the summer. In the winter, not so much. That is what I find here in the midwest. In California I have friends that are hopping all the time.

For me Januari would be the best time to go on holiday. Almost no work. Februari/march is still on the slow side. There is also mostly a short nothing of 2 weeks in the middle of the 6 weeks during summerholiday. That is when I'm on holiday as well.

My clown club has fewer than half of the number of corporate picnics it usually has booked for the summer. Last year I did five or six for the club, and this year I'm signed up for two. Companies are cutting back on expenses at picnics or eliminating them altogether.

I don't see how working at the local rest. for tips and food (no money from the buss.) is different than what the store wanted to do. Both are offering what is of no or almost no cost to them for you to work.

If they have something to offer that I want (advertising or food) I still request money. Not as much as if they had nothing for me. But they should still pay for the service.

So you were doing the same as the juggler, just in different locations.

Make 'em pay! Or we don't play. Restaurants can afford something for the entertainers, they just don't want to if they can get away without. One of the really important factors that I have found and it is steadily climbing on my ladder of importance is the type of restaurants that you approach.

Don't tease me and not please me!

Tell us more about what these "types" of restaurants are.

Idealy you are looking at restaurants that are frequented by the middle class or the upper middle class when they want to go out and have a good time and relax with family or friends. These are the somewhat hoity toity types, that are caught in the race of keeping up appearances. Trendy restaurants but more so frequented by locals and not as much by travelers (in this day and age all their extra money is going in the gas tank.) Also chains tend to be easier to get into and stay in than Mom & Pop type places. If the chain already has a family night that is a plus. If other restaurants in the chain have entertainment that is a double plus. So, to put is all together restaurants like: Damon's, Famous Daves, TGI Fridays, Chilis, Applebees.

So you are saying it works for you. Well, I guess the juggler who works for free/advertising thinks it works for him. So don't pick on him when you do the same.

Luki - I am cleaning out my mailbox today, we will have to talk further and see what answers or at least approaches we can come up with.
