I hate that... When someone calls you out of the blue and asks you to do an event "to get the word out" about your services. I do quite a lot of volunteer work, but will almost universally refuse these events (regardless of the charity/business) if they call me with an attitude like they are doing me a favor by allowing me to spend my cash on supplies and give them my time just so I can "be seen."

I love it when they say "it will be great publicity" and the paper posts "And we also had a clown"

Yes I understand. Have you ever noticed that the guy running the bounce house was hired. The guy running the food wagon isn't handing out free food and drinks, yet hey! let's see if the clowns can bring in a couple hundred bucks worth of balloons and twist them for free. Naw, we don't need to keep them in water. Just feed them cold hot dogs, Over salted popcorn and warm pop. Oh, and we can't afford to just feed them for free. make sure to charge them too.

Some one said that if you do free shows they treat you poorly,
I charge a reasonable price they treat you well.
and if you charge them way to much they have someone help carry in your equiptment.

You are treated as well as your perceived worth and a free clown is worth nothing to them.

I agree about not doing things for free, for the last three years I've tried to get into the "See Lancaster" events to be told yes then no, because the Library had some one who would "dress up", but they'd call and try and get me to do it for the "free publ", This yr. I've fininally have broken through, I don't think it's anything I did, except not give in and I've been seen at a few other events. but this year I've done 3 for several city organization and got a call about doing some thing at the drug treatment center. I've got a paid gig with Bojangles that is been very promising, been going on for 2 months now, we met again to day to plan out the rest of the summer then when the schools start their, programs for kids night.
I'm not trying to brag, what I'm trying to say is hang in there, some time it take a while.
