kids hats
several have mentions putting hats on the b-kids head to make it special. If it's hat's you keep and reuse you need to get in the habit of disinfecting them, you never know who might have a few little friends along for the ride.
But that being said. Dollar Tree has some great load fuzzy hats and I bought several so I could give my assistant his/hat. Just an FUI
Balloon hat could illiminate the problem.

I like to make the b-day child an outrageous hat. One that is almost 2 big for the kid...lol makes for a great picture.

Yep, I've gotta agree with ya Sue. Don't want any little friends along for the ride. The super huge crazy balloon hats I've seen created would be just the ticket. Just be sure and don't outdo the one you made for the birthday kiddo.

So what is the best way to disinfect cloth hats? Some of them are plush and cannot really be tossed into the washing machine, especially on a frequent basis. Is there a way you can spray a hat to rid it of any undesirable critters.

I imagine a hospital grade disinfectant would suffice. Bowling Alleys (I know! Not the best reference!) use a disinfectant spray on their rental shoes so it has to have at least some use in getting rid of the creepy crawlers...

Put it in a closed bag in a freezer for 2 weeks and anything on it will be dead

Rid makes a spray for furniture and things that can not be washed in hot soapy water for killing head lice and it would be safe for hats. They do make a generic brand at most stores. Other wise you put it inside a bag and keep closed tight for 2 weeks. This is my advise for you. When not clown, I have been a Cosmetologist for 25 years. (hairstylist) gidget

If you can get hats that can be in the dryer on "hot", and dry for 20 minutes, this is supposed kill the "ride alongs". Also, you can put the hats in a dark, plastic sack. Tie is tight, put in a closet. Come back in two weeks, and "ride alongs" should be no longer

A few weeks ago, I saw several styles of colorful hats at the craft store. I purchased three canvas bucket hats for myself and wore them all week at Moose Camp. You may find a deal now that summer is coming to an end and most groups have purchased their craft supplies already. I also saw some foam hats that were cheap and easy to decorate with foam stickers. That won't help you reuse/clean the hats, but if they are cheap enough, it would make a nice gift for the birthday child.

I wonder if this would work?
I saw on tv the other day, a hand-held steam machine that disinfects with steam. It was used on high chairs, seats, teething toys, curtains, everything imaginable. This might be a more environment-friendly and efficient alternative to the disinfectant spray.
