Clown Heart Eating a HAMBURGER Could Get You a Gig (Marketing)

Hubby and I just returned from a local chain restaurant that we always go to on Sunday afternoon to get our favorite burger. The place is usually dead in there so I asked the server when their busiest time was--he said it was the lunch crowd from area corporate buildings. They are completely mobbed at lunch and completely dead in the evening, so I asked if I could speak to the manager because I had a marketing idea.

While I was waiting for the manager to come over, I remembered the random small plastic toy hand I found on the ground earlier in the day, so I took it out of my pocket. When the manager came over, I said, "I thought you could use a hand to build up your evening business." And I dropped the plastic hand on the table in front of him. That was a perfect ice-breaker and as he was laughing about the hand gag, I knew that I got his attention.

I proceeded to ask him if he ever considered having a Family Night or a Kid's Night. He said, "You know, funny you should mention that because I just took this location over last month and have been really thinking hard about what I can do to get the business picked up at nights, and yes, I've been seriously considering doing a Family Night once or twice a week."

BINGO.

I told him all about Artsy the Clown and how kids love facepainting and table magic. I even threw in there about balloon twisting just to see if he'd bite on more bait (I am allergic to the balloons and shudder at the thought of having to do the balloons, but I figured once he saw my facepainting, he'll have me do that anyway. strategy talk.)

Fortunately, he proceeded to tell me that balloons are a liability and that he's not interested in that, so I quickly got him off that subject and went back to discussing the facepainting and magic and how colorful my tricks are and blah blah blah, and that kids love ARTSY.

He said, "This is exactly what I was looking for. Send me your promo kit so that I can give it to the regional manager. I'm meeting with him the end of this week."

BINGO.

Looks like our favorite burgers are gonna be on the house real soon. Mmmmmm!

Always look for fruitful possibilities wherever you go, whatever you do, whenever you do it, the gigs are there just waiting to be plucked off the Giving Tree.

If anyone tries this approach, I'd be interested in knowing how it went for you.

I hope it goes well. I am surprised to hear that balloons are a liability.

The manager was referring to the balloons being a choking hazard.

I knwo a lot of restaurants that do balloons, but that's their decision I guess.

Good for you! I hope it pans out well!

I posted this thread to encourage everyone to give this idea a try in their own area. Businesses are slow in this economy and what a better way to boost morale than to send in the clowns, right?
