None. There are many other ways to be funny without resorting to using something that mimics the sound of bodily functions.

Default acceptable noise

They work well with a hand under the arm. It's a little more acceptable, but I agree, we are looking for laughs, not red faces from our audience.

(I guess I dunno how to the quote thing yet.)

We have used them in our routine. I will take several whoopie cushions and drop them on the floor as I cross the stage to set up our magic box. (My arms are full of supplies and I don't notice that I've dropped them.) I pretend to have forgotten something and exit the stage from the opposit side I entered.

Cubby enters and 'accidentally" steps on one. Startled/embarrassed by the noise he looks down, notices the cushion...laughs. He then notices the others on the floor and proceeds to step on each one (slowly), snickering after each.

After the last one is stepped on, I enter... see the whoopie cushions on the floor and tell Cubby to pick up his mess so we can start the show. I exit. Cubby rolls his eyes and starts to do as he was told. As he bends over to pick each one up he "farts" (pressing on a hidden cusion in his pocket) and responds snickering/embarrassed. This happen with each one as he crosses the stage, picking them up, and finally exiting.

We've used this skit several times and it is always a big hit!

if you do hospital clowning you will find humor over bodily functions can be a good thing. In the hospital you can't get away from such things. It is weighed and messured daily. To make light of what they have to face on a daily basics (especially with children) can make it easier for them. Things in the hospital are very different than a b-day party.
