Lightbulb Rabbit Husbandry

This is a skit that I got online and have had fun and success with. This is a mime skit.

I first start with the music I use "American Patrol" by Glen Miller.

Then I have a box with bars and a door in the front. In one corner is a sign that says "Raising Invisable Rabbits". I also have a Berlap bag filled with pillow stuffing and a small bow and a bottle of water.

The skit begins with the music starting and Jasper entering. He puts his cane down and goes to get the bag of food. He seems to have trouble moving the bag and waves another clown in to help and while he is streaching, the other clown just picks up the bag and lays it on the table like it was a feather. Jasper then chases that clown out.

Then he opens the cage and removes a rabbit holding it like a baby and tickling the chin. It bites his finger and he spends a little time getting it off. OUCH. Then sucking his finger he starts to put the rabbit back and waves his finger at the rabbit and pulls it back quick as the rabbit tries to bite it again.

Then he pulls out the second rabbit and pets it on it's back. Then as he pets it it leaves him a present in his other hand. YECK! While wiping his hand on his pants he returns the second rabbit to the cage. Forgetting to close the door.

He then turns to fill the food dish. He turns to see a rabbit on the ground he chases it around and catches it and returns it to the cage and closes the door.

After filling the dish he opens the door and puts it in the cage. And notices that there are three rabbits not two in the cage. He takes one out and sends it on it's way. Then he fills the water dish and when returning the cage he finds four rabbits.

After removing the two extra rabbits he turns to the cage and finds five rabbits. This goes on till the music is close to ending and then he reaches over to the sign next to the cage and pulls out a sign that says "RABBITS 4 SALE" and then grabs his cane and walks off the stage.

That is a hoot!

How do you convey to the audience the fact that the rabbits are multiplying... especially with say, schoolkids? Do you count them on your fingers at the beginning of the skit?

The fact that there are two rabbits is, before feeding I pull out only two and then as they multiply I count on my fingers and then show the audience that there should only be two in the cage.

The music I use actually goes pretty well with the performance it is long enough and there is a time where the tempo builds as I chase the lose rabbit around.

But, once I show only two there are two rabbits it is easy to figure out what happens next.

I just never have any trouble with this skit, and Scruffy loves it.
